Jane the Worthy: Revisiting Jason Aaron’s “Thor” Arc

In this episode (welcome to season 6 by the way) Sam and Brian revisit Thor: Love and Thunder, this time focusing on the character of Jane Foster. We both felt the film left a lot on the table regarding Jane and her worthiness to be Thor, and a dive into Jason Aaron’s Thor series reveals so much more about her struggles with faith and ultimately her worthiness. She serves as a great counterpoint to both Gorr the God-butcher and Thor Odinson. Even if you’re not a big Thor reader, this comic is well worth your time. Plus we talk about resonances with the story of Jesus, and Brian still questions why Sam hasn’t watched The Umbrella Academy.

The Dollar Bin: Brian and Sam discuss Frank Miller’s “The Dark Knight Returns”

Here is our Dollar Bin, Church of the Geek’s equivalent version of the discount long box full of old comics that hold a treasure. Brian and Sam hold up a previous episode for a re-examination and this one is a gem.

In this episode we dive into the classic 1986 publication of The Dark Knight Returns. A title that Brian had never read.  Creative team: Frank Miller, Klaus Janson and Lynn Varley. It was a landmark series that redefined the character for generations, and its impact is still felt today in films like Batman V Superman and most recently The Batman.

Steve to Sam, Clint to Kate – Passing the Mantle

It’s an extra special episode with two of our favorite people, Janel Baker and Rev. Shayna Watson! Inspired by our discussion of the Hawkeye series, the gang gets together to talk about the topic of “passing the mantle” in comics, movies, academia and the church.

Discussed:

  • the nuances and complexities of passing the mantle(s) in Thor
  • THAT batsuit
  • choosing the mantle vs. being chosen for the mantle
  • Michael Keaton’s eyes
  • comparing the prophet Samuel to Tony Stark
  • choosing new voices in academia
  • accepting the mantle without losing your identity
  • how do congregations pass the mantle of leadership well?
